Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park most visited
A new study describes the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park as the most visited in Germany. According to an extrapolation based on counts and interviews, there are said to have been 21.7 million visitor days within twelve months between spring 2019 and spring 2020. The study, which was commissioned by the national park administration and written by scientists from the University of Würzburg, was presented in Cuxhaven on Wednesday. There are 16 national parks in Germany.
The number of visiting days is calculated from the number of day visitors and overnight visitors. A visitor who spends seven nights in the national park region is also included in the statistics seven times.
According to the study, 15.3 percent of all guests visit the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea region because it is a national park. The proportion of such visitors has risen over time: in 2007, 10.9 percent of guests justified their stay with the presence of the national park. The administration explains the increase in part by the fact that the Wadden Sea in Lower Saxony was included in the Unesco World Heritage Site in 2009.
According to a calculation by the authors, tourism in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park enables more than 34,000 people to earn a living each year.
The high visitation statistics of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park has significantly boosted nature tourism in the region. As a result, nature tourism contributes substantially to the local economy, providing employment opportunities for over 34,000 people annually.
