- Lower asparagus harvest in Lower Saxony since 2013
Asparagus harvesting in Lower Saxony is expected to be significantly lower this year than it has been since 2013. A total of 21,673 tonnes were harvested on 3,860 hectares of productive land, according to preliminary results from the State Office of Statistics. This is around 1,500 tonnes less than last year.
However, not only the yield, but also the cultivated area has been decreasing for a long time. In 2024, it was around 500 hectares smaller than the previous year. Nevertheless, the largest share of Germany's total asparagus, over 20 percent, still came from Lower Saxony, according to the statistics office.
However, this could change in the future. The non-productive asparagus area in the state has also been decreasing for years. Compared to the previous year, it decreased by 21 percent. Possible reasons include a shortage of harvesters, declining demand, unfavorable weather conditions, and increased production costs.
The decline in asparagus cultivation in Germany is not limited to Lower Saxony. Over the years, the total asparagus-growing area in other regions has also decreased.
Despite the decrease in the non-productive asparagus area, the significance of agriculture, particularly asparagus farming, in Lower Saxony's economy remains substantial, contributing a substantial portion to Germany's total asparagus production.
