Lower appreciation for tourism in the country
According to a recent survey, locals' appreciation of tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has declined. As the state tourism association announced on Monday, according to this year's Tourism Acceptance Study, 66% of respondents considered tourism to be important for their place of residence. In 2021 and 2022, the figure was 74 percent, according to the data. According to the figures, the appreciation of tourism for one's own region and the federal state as a whole or with regard to the economy, image, jobs or culture has also fallen.
Tobias Woitendorf, head of the association and state tourism commissioner, told the German Press Agency that "the small consolation is that there is a nationwide trend pointing in the same direction". According to him, crises and uncertainties are contributing to this. In addition, discussions about the burdens of tourism may have somewhat overshadowed the benefits in the past.
For the study carried out by the German Institute for Tourism Research at the West Coast University of Applied Sciences and dwif-Consulting GmbH, more than 1,390 representatively selected people in MV were surveyed on tourism acceptance by telephone and online between May and July of this year.
Despite the decline in locals' appreciation for tourism in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Tobias Woitendorf, the state tourism commissioner, recognizes a nationwide trend toward the same sentiment. This shift in sentiment might be influenced by various crises and uncertainties, as well as a potential overshadowing of tourism's benefits due to discussions about its burdens within economic policy.
