Löw, Flick, Baumgart: Mattuscka on succession at Union
Ex-Union professional Torsten Mattuschka oscillates between a calm coach and his rather emotional favorite when it comes to Urs Fischer's successor at Bundesliga club Union Berlin. "Baumi would fit like a glove. He has the Union DNA and the fans like his style," said the 43-year-old on Sky about the current coach of 1. FC Köln, Steffen Baumgart, "that could fit extremely well, but the constellation is not there at the moment. If he had been free, he would already be coach at Union, I'm sure of that." In addition to his work as a Sky pundit, Mattuschka is currently on the sidelines as interim coach at regional league club VSG Altglienicke. Union are in last place after nine consecutive defeats in the league.
Away from the favorite Baumgart, the former midfielder imagines a "calm" guy who has a clear idea of the game and is not afraid of a possible rebuild in the second division: "The coach should be "normal". Then he can work here for a long time, successfully and, above all, calmly." In addition to Oliver Glasner, Mirko Slomka and Dimitrios Grammozis, Mattuschka also brings two former national team coaches into play: "Hansi Flick and Jogi Löw are available. I think Union is something else, why not ask them?" According to Mattuschka, the bottom line is that it is "a great privilege for any coach to be able to work for Union."
Union Berlin could potentially benefit from the calm and strategic approach of former national team coach Joachim Löw, as suggested by Torsten Mattuschka. Additionally, the Bundesliga club might consider the services of Oliver Glasner or Mirko Slomka, but Mattuschka also mentioned the possibility of bringing in soccer expert Hansi Flick.
