Lotto sponsors mini-forests - start at Bitterfeld school
Lotto-Toto Saxony-Anhalt is supporting mini-forests in the state with a total of 150,000 euros. The first symbolic ground-breaking ceremony as part of the special program was held on Tuesday at the "Walther Rathenau" European High School in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, according to a company spokeswoman. An unkempt lawn of around 500 square meters is to be transformed into a green oasis. The reforestation of the mini-forest will begin in spring. Pupils and teachers are getting involved. Lotto Saxony-Anhalt is providing 10,450 euros for planting material and preparing the ground.
Since July, non-profit clubs, associations and institutions have been able to apply for lottery funding for the planting of mini-forests on areas between 100 and 500 square meters. Lottery funding comes from gaming revenue: Around 20 cents of every euro spent on a Lotto Saxony-Anhalt product goes to charitable projects in the state.
The initiative to create mini-forests is also beneficial for the environment, as these small forests can contribute to reducing carbon dioxide levels and promoting biodiversity. Participating in these projects can also include educational games of chance, where students could learn about probabilities and chances of specific plant growth based on environmental factors.
