Losse-Müller: 5000 euros for those affected by the storm surge

Following the severe storm surge in the Baltic Sea, SPD parliamentary group leader Thomas Losse-Müller has called for swift aid for the victims. "Of course we accept the Prime Minister's offer of talks to discuss the financing of flood aid together," Losse-Müller told the German Press Agency. "But the proposals on the table are not enough."

"It is important for us that there is unbureaucratic emergency aid like during the coronavirus pandemic," said Losse-Müller. At that time, the state had shown that it was capable of doing this administratively. "The few families who lost a lot or everything in the flood must now be paid out money quickly." His parliamentary group proposes 5000 euros as an amount. "This would allow the most urgent purchases to be made quickly." The little money for the country, however, makes a huge difference for those affected.

Speed is now of the essence, said Losse-Müller. "This time, there must not be a hanging game as there was with the implementation of the relief package against the high energy costs." The SPD will make its approval dependent on these issues.

The state government of Minister President Daniel Günther (CDU) is planning a special fund "Reconstruction Flood Disaster 2023" following damage estimated at 200 million euros in Schleswig-Holstein. The storm surge on the night of October 21 caused enormous destruction along the Baltic coast. One woman lost her life on Fehmarn.

The SPD parliamentary group is advocating for swift and unbureaucratic emergency aid, similar to the coronavirus pandemic, for those severely affected by the storm surge. Losse-Müller's group proposes a payment of 5000 euros per family to cover immediate necessities, acknowledging the substantial impact this amount can have on those affected.
