National team - Longer with coach Hrubesch? Rettig has "nothing against it"
DFB managing director Andreas Rettig can also imagine Horst Hrubesch as national coach of the German women's soccer team in the longer term. "I have nothing against Horst Hrubesch celebrating his 73rd birthday as national coach," said Rettig on ZDF after the DFB team's 3-0 win over Denmark in Rostock on Friday evening. The 72-year-old Hrubesch, whose birthday is on April 17th, had agreed with the association that he would initially only coach the European Championship runners-up until their final Nations League group match against Wales on Tuesday.
Hrubesch had stepped in as interim head coach at the beginning of October after the then national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, whose contract with the German Football Association (DFB) has since been terminated, called in sick. "It's great what Horst has achieved here with his coaching team," said Rettig. "You can see that the team has a completely different body language, it's on fire, it runs for the coach."
If the DFB team wins against Wales on Tuesday, they will certainly take part in the four-team final tournament of the Nations League at the end of February, in which the other two European places for the Olympic Games in Paris next summer will be decided. France are already seeded as Olympic hosts.
Hrubesch had already indicated before the Denmark game that he would also coach the team in the final tournament. What happens after that remains to be seen and will probably also depend on whether the German team takes part in the Olympics or not. "I want to stick with that for now and see how it develops," said the 1980 European champion on Friday evening.
There is also still a need for clarification regarding the position of DFB sports director for the German women's soccer team. Although the agreement with 2003 World Champion Nia Künzer (43) is considered certain, Rettig was not yet able to announce a deal on Friday. "We have made a promise with the new director - whether it's Nia Künzer or not. We have settled everything. Now we have to clarify things that are not in our decision-making area," he explained.
