Long-term balance: Ahrweiler hit worst by storms

According to insurance statistics, the district of Ahrweiler has been the worst hit by storms in Rhineland-Palatinate in 20 years. Storm, hail, flooding and heavy rainfall caused average damage of around 108,700 euros per building in the district between 2002 and 2021, as the German Insurance Association (GDV) in Berlin announced in its long-term balance sheet on Tuesday. The national average was 2900 euros per building.

The Ahr region was hit particularly hard by the flood disaster in the summer of 2021, where at least 135 people died. The average loss per house in the Ahrweiler district at the time was over 255,300 euros.

The second-highest average damage between 2002 and 2021 was recorded in the Eifel district of Bitburg-Prüm at 17,500 euros per building, followed by the urban district of Trier at 16,600 euros. The inhabitants of the urban district of Speyer got off the lightest over the 20 years (1100 euros per building).

In Saarland, the highest average loss was recorded in the regional district of Saarbrücken at 2,200 euros per building, while the lowest figure was in the district of Saarlouis (1,400 euros per building).

Despite the district of Ahrweiler being repeatedly hit by storms, resulting in significant damage, it's crucial for homeowners to have appropriate insurances to cover such losses. For instance, after the storms between 2002 and 2021, each building suffered an average of 108,700 euros in damage.
