Justice - Local court rejects proceedings against ex-CDU member of parliament
Former member of the Bundestag Mark Hauptmann(CDU) will not initially be tried on suspicion of tax evasion in Meiningen. The district court rejected the Meiningen public prosecutor's application to open the main proceedings, the court announced on Friday in response to an inquiry. The court explained that, based on a preliminary assessment of the results of the investigation, it was "not possible to prove the crime with sufficient probability". It was a matter of proving intentional acts.
The Meiningen public prosecutor's office immediately lodged an appeal against the court's decision.
According to the court, the former CDU member of parliament Hauptmann is accused by the public prosecutor's office of having committed tax evasion in 2021 by submitting an incorrect VAT return to the Suhl tax office. According to earlier information from the public prosecutor's office, the tax authorities are said to have incurred losses "in the lower five-figure range".
Hauptmann had also been investigated by the Thuringian public prosecutor's office for coronavirus mask deals. However, these proceedings on suspicion of bribery were dropped as there was no sufficient suspicion. Hauptmann resigned from the Bundestag in 2021.
