Investigations - LKA: Missing ammunition for police marksmen
The Brandenburg State Office of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case of around 4,400 rounds of ammunition for sport shooters that went missing from the police. The initial suspicion of embezzlement is fulfilled from the point of view of the public prosecutor's office in Frankfurt (Oder), said the spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office, Ricarda Böhme. "The State Office of Criminal Investigation has now been asked to take up and conduct an investigation." The State Court of Auditors discovered inconsistencies during an audit and informed the Ministry of the Interior in January, which called in the public prosecutor's office in October. The state parliament opposition still sees a need for clarification.
It is about a sighting shoot at a shooting range on June 7 and 8, 2022 in Frankfurt (Oder) for inclusion in a selection team. The State Court of Auditors doubts that the specified quantity - 12,200 cartridges and air pressure ammunition - could have been fired by up to ten shooters. The auditors also scrutinized sighting shoots and competitions since 2017. In total, the whereabouts of around 24,900 rounds of ammunition remain unclear. The initial suspicion against unknown persons only relates to 4400 rounds.
The Left Party and the Free Voters see unanswered questions. "It is still unclear where the ammunition is," Left Party interior politician Andrea Johlige told the German Press Agency. "At best, it has been fired in the club. In the worst case, it has been passed into hands where we don't want to see Brandenburg police ammunition."
Brandenburg's Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) had acknowledged deficits and announced consequences. A specialist supervisor for shooting was also responsible for ammunition in the central police service - according to the police academy, this personnel union has been abolished. In addition, there was a lack of evidence as to who had fired what - which is why control obligations had been introduced.
According to the Court of Audit, only two officers responded to the questioning of the shooters. "We must work towards ensuring that all the marksmen involved are heard as to where the ammunition has gone," demanded Left Party MP Johlige.
On November 8, Stübgen had informed the state parliament's Committee on Internal Affairs about the 4400 rounds of ammunition that had gone missing - but not yet about the almost 25,000 rounds. Matthias Stefke, a politician from the Free Voters, criticized: "The question that interests me is why the number of rounds of ammunition was not fully communicated on 8 November." Stübgen pointed out on Wednesday that out of respect for the Court of Auditors, he only stated the ammunition for which the public prosecutor's office had been called in. The Court of Audit had only informed the public about the missing ammunition last Monday.
