Little traffic expected for Christmas weekend only on Christmas Eve and the first national holiday
The ADAC expects the most traffic jams on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Christmas Eve, which falls on Sunday, is expected to be rather quiet, as is the first national holiday. The return traffic will start in the afternoon on Boxing Day, but often only after the holidays on Wednesday, December 27. On these days, many people will be returning from their Christmas vacation or starting their winter vacation.
The ADAC expects traffic jams abroad, especially on the long-distance roads to the winter sports resorts, such as the Tauern, Inntal and Brenner highways in Austria, the Fernpass route and the Tyrolean, Salzburg and Vorarlberg federal highways. Even more traffic jams than usual are to be expected on the Tauern and Brenner highways due to urgently needed construction work.
In Switzerland, longer waiting times must be expected on the Gotthard route, the access roads to the ski resorts in Graubünden, the Bernese Oberland, Valais and central Switzerland. In Italy, in addition to the Brenner route, the roads to the Pustertal, Grödner and Gadertal valleys and the Vinschgau valley are also at the greatest risk.
