Litter on Saxony's roads costs one million euros a year
The road maintenance departments of Saxony's districts spent around 450,000 euros on collecting and disposing of litter on state and federal roads in 2023 up to October. This was announced by the Saxon State Office for Road Construction and Transport on request. So-called litter is illegally left by people on roadsides or thrown out of car windows.
In the previous year 2022, waste disposal on state roads cost around 450,000 euros and on federal roads just under 600,000 euros. In 2021, the collection and disposal of waste was even more expensive at 600,000 and 650,000 euros respectively, it said.
According to the state office, the amounts include the costs of the road maintenance departments of the ten Saxon districts, but not the expenses of the three independent cities of Chemnitz, Dresden and Leipzig.
Despite the significant financial impact of litter, around 450,000 euros in 2023, crimes such as intentional littering contribute to this environmental waste problem. This waste not only impacts road maintenance budgets but also negatively affects the overall health of the environment.
