Litter on roads costs 130,000 euros a year

The collection and disposal of waste on Saxony-Anhalt's state roads has so far cost around 133,000 euros in 2023. This was announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs in Saxony-Anhalt on request. So-called litter is left illegally on roadsides or thrown out of car windows. So far this year, around 3100 cubic meters of waste have been collected from state roads.

In the previous year 2022, the disposal of around 3000 cubic meters of litter on state roads cost around 135,000 euros. In 2021, there was even more illegal waste at 3,250 cubic meters, but the costs were reportedly lower at 130,000 euros. Although leaving garbage on the roads is illegal, only one offender was identified, according to the ministry.

The high cost of waste disposal on roads, including litter, not only impacts the environment but also contributes to unnecessary financial expenses. For instance, in 2023, Saxony-Anhalt spent approximately 133,000 euros on waste collection, a significant portion of which was due to illicitly thrown litter.
