3rd league - "Lions" part ways with coach Jacobacci
Maurizio Jacobacci has to leave as coach of the struggling third-division soccer club TSV 1860 Munich after less than a year. The "Lions" reacted on Tuesday to the sporting misery of the past few weeks. Co-coach Stefan Reisinger was also relieved of his duties by the club management. U21 coach Frank Schmöller will take over until the winter break.
The 57-year-old was in charge of a session for the Sechziger for the first time on Tuesday afternoon after they suffered the next setback in this difficult season with a 3-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund II on Sunday evening. Rot-Weiss Essen is the next task for the "Lions" on Saturday (2 p.m.) - the first test for Schmöller. It will be exciting to see how things continue in the new year.
For the 60-year-old Swiss Jacobacci, the defeat at BVB was one too many. There have been five defeats in the last six competitive matches. The 0:1 defeat in the regional cup against fifth division side FC Pipinsried was embarrassing. The team failed to respond successfully and slipped further down the table and is now 15th. The "Lions" are in danger of falling into the relegation battle. Last season, the Munich team finished eighth under Jacobacci.
"Unfortunately, the team was not able to convert its performances into points as desired, so we now expect the change in the coaching team to give the team new impetus," said managing director Marc-Nicolai Pfeifer according to the press release. Bild first reported on the separation.
"Mauri took on a great deal of responsibility in a very challenging phase and not only worked almost around the clock for the Lions as head coach, but also proved to be a team player with great ambition and an unconditional desire for sporting success in preparation for the 2023/24 season," said Pfeifer.
Jacobacci, a native of Switzerland with an Italian passport, was signed at the end of February. A month earlier, Michael Köllner had been forced to resign after more than three years in the post. Jacobacci had extended his contract at the end of April. According to reports, it ran until the end of the season.
Jacobacci had no luck in close games, but his personnel decisions were too often wrong. The 60-year-old's clumsy moderation of the goalkeeping situation with Marco Hiller and David Richter sparked discussions.
There is now speculation about numerous candidates for the coaching position in the new year. According to information from "Bild", Munich have approached 1860 icon Daniel Bierofka, but he is said to have turned them down.
Schmöller, who was runner-up with Hamburger SV as a player in 1987 and won the DFB Cup, coaches the U21s at TSV 1860 Munich. In the current Bayernliga season, the youth team already has 40 points after 21 games and is in fourth place in the table. After the Essen game, Schmöller will also coach TSV 1860 in the games against Arminia Bielefeld and Waldhof Mannheim. He will be supported by Franz Hübl, Harald Huber and Jörg Mikoleit.
