Colorful - Linkes Alsterufer once again wins the world's largest school chess tournament
At the largest school chess tournament in the world "Right Alsterbank vs. Left Alsterbank" in Hamburg, nearly 3700 girls and boys fought for the trophy on Wednesday. With a score of 953:895, the left bank won the tournament once again, as the school administration announced. According to the administration, the tournament is the largest in the world and has been taking place since 1958. For the third time, children and adolescents played outside.
The opening move was made by School Senator Ksenija Bekeris (SPD) on the board of the 15-year-old Yunus from the 9th grade of Helmut Schmidt-Gymnasium and of the 14-year-old Voyta from the Gymnasium Grootmoor. Both were suggested for the opening move by their team leaders, as it was reported. Since Yunus would press his thumbs for the Turkish team, Voyta would support the Czech team.
Representing the left bank, the third team of Grundschule Redder received the large traditional cup under shining sun. They had won their match with a score of 8:0 and thus contributed best to the victory of the left bank, as the school administration announced. The cup for the best guest team was won by the Johann-Rist Gymnasium from Wedel. To bridge the time between the end of the tournament and the cup presentation, the moderator Christoph Biemann from "Sendung mit der Maus" entertained the children and adolescents with everyday experiments.
