Linguist Feilke receives Konrad Duden Prize

Linguist Helmuth Feilke will be honored with the Konrad Duden Prize 2023. As the city of Mannheim announced on Wednesday, the Giessen native will receive the prize, which is endowed with 12,500 euros, for his special services to research into the German language. The prize will be awarded to Feilke on March 6, 2024.

"The Konrad Duden Prize honors personalities who succeed in building a bridge between German linguistics and the public with their research," said Mannheim's Lord Mayor Christian Specht (CDU) following the council's decision. Feilke had rendered outstanding services to research into the acquisition and appropriation of language skills. The jury is made up of representatives from the City of Mannheim, the University of Mannheim and the Duden editorial team at Cornelsen-Verlag.

The linguist, who conducts research at Justus Liebig University Giessen, is reportedly co-editor of the journals "Praxis Deutsch" and "Zeitschrift für Germanistische Linguistik".

The Konrad Duden Prize has been awarded since 1959 and has been awarded every three years since 2011. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the award ceremony has recently been postponed, according to the city. Linguist Christa Dürscheid therefore only received her 2020 award in 2022.

Feilke's research in language acquisition and appropriation has significantly contributed to the field of German linguistics, which is taught extensively in universities across the country. His work, recognized through the Konrad Duden Prize, bridges the gap between linguistic scholarship and public understanding, showcasing the importance of language science in our society.
