- Lightning and thunder again over Baden-Württemberg
Thunder and lightning continue to dictate the capricious weather in Baden-Württemberg. After a partly stormy night, many showers and thunderstorms swept across the region, interspersed with sultry summer weather. The German Weather Service (DWD) has warned of severe weather potential. Especially until the afternoon, there are expected to be passing thunderstorms in the south, accompanied by local severe weather events with heavy rain of up to 40 liters per square meter per hour. Hail with a grain size of up to two centimeters and gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour are also expected.
Already in the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the police in the country had to intervene several times due to the weather. A lightning strike hit a transformer station in Alpirsbach (district of Freudenstadt). Another lightning strike occurred in a hut in Dürbheim (district of Tuttlingen). No one was injured, but around 30 young people and about 20 supervisors had a narrow escape. Moreover, several branches and trees fell down. Some of them also hit roads.
In the evening, despite further thunderstorms, the rain is expected to ease overall, according to DWD. On Friday, there will still be thunderstorms, especially in the south of the federal state. At the latest on Sunday, the DWD expects the sun to break through more often and the weather to remain mostly dry.
The German Weather Service (DWD) encourages residents to stay updated on the ongoing forecast, as severe weather conditions, including passing thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail, and strong winds, are expected until afternoon. Despite the forecast, the local police had several weather-related incidents during the previous night, demonstrating the unpredictability of thunderstorms.
