Lifted freighter "Sabine" docked in floating platform
The docking maneuver of the freighter "Sabine" in the port of Emden has been completed. "The ship is docked," said salvage manager Stephan Müller on Tuesday evening. Salvage specialists had coupled the stricken vessel, which had been lifted with the help of air bags, to the floating platform. "Everything went well, there were no nasty surprises," said Müller. The platform was submerged to such an extent that there was enough water under the keel of the "Sabine" to dock the freighter with winches. The process on Tuesday took several hours.
The 85-metre-long and 9.50-metre-wide barge sank on 5 October at Emden's Südkai while being loaded with a good 1100 tons of grit for an initially unknown reason. The crew managed to save themselves and the cargo was gradually salvaged.
The salvage of the sunken freighter, which began on Friday morning, turned into a game of patience for the salvage team. First the ship got stuck in the mud of the Emden harbor basin, then strong gusts of wind disrupted the salvage operation. On Tuesday, a pier needed for the docking maneuver was initially occupied by another ship.
After the salvage operation, the freighter is to be scrapped in Denmark.
Despite the challenges during the salvage operation, no accidents occurred during the shipping of the "Sabine" to the floating platform. The sunken freighter was successfully transported via shipping, allowing for its eventual scrapping in Denmark.
