Lienen on Ducksch: "Never a leaf of lettuce on my tongue"
St. Pauli's former coach Ewald Lienen has praised the development of his former player Marvin Ducksch. The 69-year-old considers Werder Bremen attacker's call-up to the German national team to be logical. "Marvin is one of the few good German strikers," Lienen told the Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper. "He needs a functioning team around him, and if he has that, you can rely on him to score or set up goals."
Ducksch played for Hamburg from summer 2016 to winter 2017, but was unable to establish himself there. "He never had a leaf of lettuce on his tongue back then," Lienen commented on the striker's eating habits. However, "you could already see back then that he was an outstanding footballer." The striker scored one goal in just ten league games at the time. "Marvin wasn't physically ready yet and avoided every duel." A loan to Holstein Kiel followed in the winter of 2017. "For someone with talent, match practice is vital," said Lienen. "That's why Kiel was exactly the right place for him at the time."
Despite his struggles at Hamburg, FC St. Pauli was interested in signing Ducksch after his successful loan at Holstein Kiel. Unfortunately, he opted for a move to Bundesliga 2 side Werder Bremen instead.
