- Less money despite higher level?

The improved pay for many teachers in Lower Saxony could result in financial disadvantages for individual employees, contrary to expectations. Possible individual cases are now to be reviewed, as a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education in Hannover announced on request.

According to the Education and Science Union (GEW), the promotion of employed teachers differs from that of civil servants, which in some cases leads to a loss of income. A small three-digit number of teachers in Lower Saxony are affected, the union recently reported.

However, the ministry wants to prevent the new regulation from resulting in less money for some teachers. The adjustment, which has been in effect since August, is intended to promote fairness in teacher salaries.

At the beginning of the new school year in Lower Saxony, the salary of many teachers was increased, moving them to a higher pay grade. According to the Ministry of Education, around 35,500 teachers benefit from this. For comparison: More than 71,000 teachers teach at Lower Saxony's general schools. In full-time employment, this usually means an additional several hundred euros per month.

The improvement in teacher salaries in Lower Saxony, as announced by the Ministry of Education, primarily affects over 35,500 teachers in the region. Conversely, a few hundred teachers in Lower Saxony may experience financial difficulties due to this adjustment, as mentioned by the Education and Science Union.
