- Leipzig's RB agrees to retain Geertruida's services.
RB Leipzig bolstered its squad on the last day of the transfer window by acquiring Dutch international footballer Lutsharel Geertruida. The captain of Feyenoord Rotterdam joins the team for approximately €20-25 million and has signed a contract that extends until June 2029. Leipzig nearly secured Geertruida's signature last year, but negotiations between the two parties fell through. This time around, however, the Dutch side was more accommodating in negotiations as Geertruida's contract was approaching its expiration date.
The departure of Mohamed Simakan cleared a path for Geertruida. The 24-year-old is on the brink of joining Al-Nassr FC of Saudi Arabia for €45 million. He is expected to ink a five-year deal with the Cristiano Ronaldo-led club this weekend, earning more than twice what he previously made in Leipzig. Leipzig, which acquired Simakan from Strasbourg in 2021 for €15 million, stands to benefit from this financial move, with only minor details left to finalize by Friday afternoon.
Meanwhile, U17 World Cup winner Winners Osawe will be temporarily leaving Leipzig, linking up with 2. Bundesliga side 1. FC Nürnberg. Leipzig has secured a buy-back option for the 17-year-old. On the flip side, André Silva appears likely to remain with Leipzig for the initial half of the season. No inquiries regarding the Portuguese international surfaced by Friday afternoon, but relocating to a country with an extended transfer window is still a possibility.
Geertruida's new team, RB Leipzig, will now have a stronger presence in the European football scene, given that Germany is known for its rich football history and top-tier leagues. After completing his move from Feyenoord Rotterdam, Geertruida will be joining a squad that has previously shown interest in his skills.
