Passing away - Legal professional Friedrich Wolff, once from the GDR, passes away.
Legendary East German lawyer, Friedrich Wolff, who once defended ex-leader Erich Honecker, has passed away at 101 years old, as confirmed by his publisher. His wife reported that Wolff passed away peacefully at home in Wandlitz, located north of Berlin.
In the former East Germany, Wolff gained notoriety through the television show "Alles was Recht ist." Prior to that, this lawyer, hailing from a Jewish family, worked as a compulsory attorney during East Berlin trials against West German government officials Hans Globke and Theodor Oberlander, who had held prominent positions in the Federal Republic. Globke and Oberlander were sentenced to prison, in absentia, in the early 1960s for their actions during the Nazi period.
After the reunification of Germany, Wolff represented not only Honecker but also other East German politicians like Hans Modrow and Hermann Axen in criminal cases brought before German courts. Various books were later published, such as Wolff's autobiography, "Lost Cases: My Defenses in Political Trials," and "Don't Come at Me with a Legal State. Friedrich Wolff and Egon Krenz in Conversation."
Wolff was born on July 30, 1922, in Berlin. Schumann shared that Wolff's funeral will take place at the Jewish Cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee, where his parent's graves were already situated since 1935.
