Community Undergoes Modification - Left-wing supporters are reluctant to accept luxury passes to the UEFA European Championship.
Berlin's Left Party officials turned down exclusive tickets for the European Football Championship, given to them by Interior and Sports Senator Iris Spranger (SPD). The faction revealed that they were offered 21 tickets in total, which included three for the final, two for the semis, and five for the quarters. These tickets were also paired with an invitation to a pre-match reception. The total value of these tickets amounted to around 7,000 euros. The Left Party's board decided not to take these tickets.
Referring to their roles as members of the Berlin House of Representatives, the faction leaders Anne Helm and Carsten Schatz shared their reasoning behind the decision. They said, "We often and gladly represent not only our party and faction, but also Berlin in various scenarios. However, at the football EM games, we aren't convinced that it must be the MPs who embody our city."
Hence, the Left Party made a proposition. They suggested, "Since we ourselves cannot use the tickets, we'd like the Sports Senator to give them away, especially to youth trainers."
They highlighted the shortage of resources for children in clubs, prompting insufficient space for them. "We will watch the games like many others - with friends, neighbors, and football fans from all over Europe at home, in the park, or at a bar or any other event," they stated.
It was previously known that all senators would receive two free tickets for the EM games in Berlin. The Senate Department for the Interior and Sport also planned to give Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) and Senator Spranger two VIP tickets for all the matches at the Berlin Olympic Stadium.
The European Championship will be hosted in Germany from June 14-July 14, with Berlin being a venue for the event. The fan mile for public viewing will be in front of the Brandenburg Gate.
