Parties - Left-wing politician von Angern for new party leadership

The Left needs a new leadership, according to the views of the Sachsen-Anhalt fraction leader Eva von Angern. Janine Wissler and Martin Schirdewan should not stand for re-election at the party conference in October, von Angern stated in Magdeburg. "I am not making a secret of it, I expect a personnel renewal."

Von Angern criticized the party chairpersons for having "one failure after another" and stated that they are no longer "fit for success." New faces with new enthusiasm are needed, she believes. "That is, in my opinion, the decisive factor: regaining hope." She added: "That's not the only thing that will save us. We also need to clarify how we want to proceed strategically-content wise."

The Left received only 2.7 percent of the votes in the European election at the beginning of June. This week, former fraction leaders Gregor Gysi and Dietmar Bartsch also called for a "structural, political, and personnel renewal." Wissler and Schirdewan have led the party together since 2022. Schirdewan recently hinted that he was considering stepping down at the party conference.

Von Angern demanded that the Left must be more strongly present with credible personalities on site, for example in constituency offices of MPs. The Left fraction in Sachsen-Anhalt has taken this approach. In Sachsen-Anhalt, the party achieved 4.8 percent in the European election.
