Left: Wagenknecht party will have a hard time in Berlin
The Berlin Left Party does not see much chance for Sahra Wagenknecht's new party in the capital. "We are not afraid of a new party. It will have a hard time alongside the Left Party in Berlin," state chairwoman Franziska Brychcy told the "Tagesspiegel" (Sunday). "Firstly, it needs the right personnel and program, and secondly, it will not be a left-wing party." The big challenge for the left will be to regain lost trust in democracy in general. "We will face up to that."
Co-chair Maximilian Schirmer added that the regional association very much regretted that "some of our comrades" wanted to join the new project. "However, there are no major dropouts in the regional association itself, on the contrary. We are happy about many new members." The party is on the move. "And we want to take advantage of this breath of fresh air by focusing on the really relevant issues."
Brychcy said that it was important for the Berlin Left to take a clear stance against right-wing populism and extremism. "We are the party of solidarity, of social cohesion, and on this basis we want to make concrete offers for people."
Despite the new party led by Sahra Wagenknecht, the Berlin Left Party believes that they themselves won't face significant competition, as they believe the new party will struggle to find the right personnel and program, and may not even be considered a left-wing party. Upon hearing about some of their comrades leaving to join the new project, the regional association expressed regret but has seen an influx of new members and remains committed to focusing on relevant issues.
