Left Party nominates further candidates for European elections
At its nomination meeting in Augsburg on Sunday, the Left Party nominated further candidates for the European elections in June. A number of further positions on the European list were to be allocated at the party conference by the afternoon, with a total of 20 candidates. While the party leadership initially prevailed with its personnel proposal for the top quartet, the delegates also elected other candidates for some of the other positions.
The top candidate on the list is party leader Martin Schirdewan, ahead of non-party refugee and climate activist Carola Rackete. She is followed by MEP Özlem Demirel and Mainz doctor Gerhard Trabert, who is also independent.
Journalist Ines Schwerdtner from Saxony-Anhalt secured fifth place, while Martin Günther from Brandenburg took sixth place on the list on Saturday evening. On Sunday morning, Desiree Becker from Hesse was elected to the next place by a narrow majority, while Alexander Kauz from Baden-Württemberg came in 8th.
The election to the European Parliament in Germany is scheduled for June 9, 2024. In 2019, the Left achieved 5.5 percent of the vote and five seats.
The delegates at the Left Party conference allocated more positions on the European list, choosing candidates who will leave with them for the elections. Among those left out of the top quartet, some delegates elected other candidates for various positions.
