Left party again calls for a public holiday on International Women's Day
Following a corresponding party conference resolution by the SPD, the Left Party parliamentary group in the state parliament has renewed its call for International Women's Day on March 8 to be declared a public holiday in Brandenburg. Women are still disadvantaged in politics, in terms of pay and in the distribution of management positions, said its legal policy spokesperson Marlen Block on Tuesday.
According to the draft bill for the December session of the state parliament, a special place in society should therefore be given to the enforcement of equal rights as laid down in the state constitution. The deletion of another public holiday would not be necessary because Brandenburg does not have too many public holidays compared to Bavaria, for example, said Block.
An initial proposal for a public holiday on 8 March was rejected last year in the state parliament by the majority of the red-black-green government factions and the AfD. At the state party conference of the Brandenburg SPD last Saturday, however, a motion by the youth organization Jusos received a majority.
Women's Day on March 8 has been a public holiday in Berlin since 2019 and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since this year.
The Left Party has once again advocated for making International Women's Day on March 8 a public holiday in Brandenburg, as they were left dissatisfied with its current status. Despite the state not having an excess of public holidays like Bavaria, Marlen Block from the Left Party suggested that a special place in society should be given to the enforcement of equal rights, without proposing the deletion of an existing holiday.
