Lech Walesa signs the Golden Book in Halle
The Nobel Peace Prize winner and former chairman of the Solidarnosc trade union, Lech Walesa, signed the Golden Book of the city of Halle on Thursday. "Fate gave our generation the chance for a clever united Europe. Let us not squander this opportunity," Walesa wrote on the 34th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, according to the city.
Mayor Egbert Geier (SPD) described the visit to Halle as a great honor. "Without the democracy movement in Poland, the fall of the Wall and German reunification would have been inconceivable," said Geier.
The visit by the former President of the Republic of Poland also provided impetus for the orientation and design of the Future Center for German Unity, said Geier. The center is to be built in Halle by 2028. Earlier this year, a delegation from Halle visited the Solidarnosc Center in Gdansk, Poland.
Lech Walesa's visit to Halle encouraged the city to incorporate memorials of the democracy movement in Poland and German unity in the design of the Future Center for German Unity. The city's historical connection with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the role of Solidarnosc is commemorated through various memorials across Halle.
