Education - Learning on the fly - new academy opens in Cottbus
In a new flying academy in Cottbus, students can learn to fly in a playful way. The US Ambassador to Germany, Amy Gutmann, opened the first Newton Flight Academy in the EU together with Brandenburg's Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) in the city in South Brandenburg.
The Academy fulfills the joint German-American promise to create opportunities for future generations, said Gutmann according to the press release from the Brandenburg State Chancellery.
Woidke said that this unique educational institution is specifically targeted at children and adolescents to arouse interest in the MINT subjects as early as possible - these are Mathematics, Informatics, Natural Sciences and Technology. "Excellent knowledge in MINT subjects will become increasingly important in the future."
The Lausitz region is the right place for the project because Brandenburg is in the midst of structural change. Due to the exit from lignite mining, billions of euros from the Federal and State governments are flowing into the Lausitz region.
Learning experience in the simulator and in the lab
The Newton Flight Academy Brandenburg wants to offer students who are enthusiastic about these subjects an unusual learning experience. Visitors learn to fly in a simulator and can conduct experiments in laboratories, as is called in Germany by Newton Germany. For example, students can take on a mission where it's about rescue coordination.
The Academy primarily addresses school classes, but also offers programs for preschool children. It belongs to a global network with locations, for example, in Beijing and Istanbul. Boeing is also involved in the project.
The Chesco GmbH project is located in Cottbus in the spaces of the former Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof department store. Woidke held talks with Boeing during a US trip in 2022 and received a commitment for the Academy afterwards.
