Emergencies - Leaking heating oil causes massive traffic disruption
Around 1100 liters of leaking heating oil caused massive traffic disruption between Karlsruhe and Stuttgart on Monday. The driver of a tanker truck only noticed that heating oil was leaking from the truck after driving around 90 kilometers, according to the police. By then, the oil had already spread over parts of federal highway 10 and highways 5, 8 and 81.
During a break in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the 53-year-old truck driver noticed that heating oil was leaking out. The reason for this is said to have been a defective or frozen drainage valve. The valve was initially closed provisionally.
According to the police, the heating oil caused considerable contamination of the affected roads. The wintry temperatures also caused black ice to form. The slippery roads led to considerable traffic obstructions, they said. The police were not initially aware of any accidents.
Since the night, numerous emergency services from the Karlsruhe, Pforzheim and Stuttgart police forces, several highway maintenance departments and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) have been working to secure traffic and clear the roads. The operations continued on Monday morning and were expected to continue until midday.
