Post the blaze, authorities in Höhfröschen (Southwest Palatinate district) are still probing the incident's origin. As of now, a definitive reason for the fire remains elusive, as per a police spokesperson.
The firefighters and the Technical Relief Agency had to put in long hours since Tuesday evening to extinguish the flames. They finally wrapped up operations on Thursday afternoon, as per a representative from the volunteer fire department in the South Palatinate community. "The structure has been leveled," the rep stated.
The batteries and power cells are now confined in water-filled containers to prevent any possible rekindling. The roof of the warehouse had to be dismantled to retrieve the batteries.
Law enforcement officers rough-estimate the damage to be in the millions. The environmental agency is now scrutinizing if the fire has also caused any ecological harm.
The police are currently assisting in the investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Due to the extensive damage, they are working closely with the environmental agency to assess any potential ecological impact.
