Parties - Laumann defends guiding culture in CDU's basic program
North Rhine-Westphalia's Minister of Labor and Health Karl-Josef Laumann(CDU) has defended the commitment to a guiding culture in the draft of the CDU's new basic program. Politics and a basic program always "breathe a bit of the spirit of the times", said the Federal Chairman of the Christian Democratic Workers' Union (CDA) on Tuesday on radio station WDR 5. Germany is currently at a point "where we must clearly ensure that we maintain social cohesion". This requires a good social policy, but also values.
In the 70-page paper on the topic of Leitkultur, the CDU writes: "All those who want to live here must recognize our Leitkultur without ifs and buts." This includes respect for the dignity of every human being, fundamental and human rights, the rule of law, respect and tolerance as well as recognition of Israel's right to exist. "Only those who are committed to our dominant culture can integrate and become German citizens."
Islamic associations had particularly criticized the wording "Muslims who share our values belong to Germany" in the CDU draft. In response, Laumann said that anyone who wanted to live in Germany had to respect the country's fundamental values and stand up for human dignity, tolerance, democracy and freedom.
Muslims are a "very important part of our country, of our society", emphasized Laumann. Many also lived the spirit of the Basic Law. But society could not be held together by a political Islam that preached the exact opposite of the Basic Law.
The basic program will be adopted in six months and will now be widely discussed. It must be "catchy" among the population and the electorate. "And that's why I think this word is actually appropriate for what we want to express."
