Hamburg SV missed out on the league lead in the 2. Bundesliga. On the second matchday, the Hanseatic club had to settle for a 1:1 (1:0) draw against Hertha BSC. In the 86th minute, Berlin's Jonjoe Kenny scored the equalizer, dashing HSV's hopes of a second win in as many games and securing Hertha's first point of the season. Ransford Königsdorffer had given the hosts the lead in the 11th minute.

Apart from a brief period at the start of the game, HSV dominated proceedings in the sold-out Volksparkstadion under its new address, Uwe-Seeler-Allee 9. Coach Steffen Baumgart fielded the same starting lineup as in the 2:1 win over 1. FC Köln in the opening game.

Königsdorffer was thus given another chance up front, and the double-goal scorer from Köln delivered. After a pinpoint cross from Bakery Jatta, Königsdorffer scored his third goal of the season to put HSV ahead. Sebastian Schonlau (18.) and Ludovit Reis (26.) missed chances to extend the lead.

HSV continued to control the game after the break, but Hertha never gave up, keeping the game exciting until the end. Linus Gechter (58.) hit the post with what was then Hertha's best chance to equalize. HSV also had a spell of post luck from a free kick by Immanuel Pherai. Seconds later, Kenny scored the equalizer.

Despite the dominant performance in the German 2. Bundesliga, Hamburg SV failed to clinch the league lead, drawing with Hertha BSC in the German Bundesliga's sister league. Despite missing an opportunity to secure their second victory in two matches, HSV could not prevent Jonjoe Kenny from levelling the score in the German Bundesliga match.
