Retail trade - Last Sunday open for business before Christmas
For the last time before Christmas this year, stores in Berlin and Brandenburg will also be open for Christmas shopping on Sundays this weekend (from 13:00). It is the second Sunday open for business in the Advent season. "We are expecting the best day of the year," said Nils Busch-Petersen, Managing Director of the Berlin-Brandenburg Trade Association. Traditionally, the third Sunday in Advent is one of the best days of the year for retailers in terms of sales.
After a good start, Christmas business is now rather sluggish this year, according to the industry association. The change in the weather has also brought back a reluctance to spend among consumers. Overall, retail sales are currently at around the same level as last year's Christmas business. Compared to the pre-corona year 2019, however, the industry is six percent below the level at that time.
