Climate activists - Last generation demonstrates against LNG terminal

Climate activists from the Letzte Generation group protested against the Rügen Terminal for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) today. According to the police, around 150 people participated in the demonstration above the Mukran Seaport in the afternoon. After the demonstration ended, approximately 30 people blocked the L29 intersection leading to the harbor for about two hours.

The police arrested 18 people from the street and issued 20 warnings. Four activists who refused to comply were taken into custody. According to their own statements, the activists had unfurled a banner with the inscription "Clean Gas – dirty lie" in canoes near the terminal in the morning.

"A LNG terminal is being built on Rügen, despite the population's objection and the resulting massive environmental damage," wrote Letzte Generation in their call to action, which was disseminated via the short message service X. According to their plans, there are supposed to be further actions on Sunday and Monday.

The German federal government defends the Rügen Terminal by referring to supply security. In light of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the federal government has accelerated the expansion of its own LNG import infrastructure to become less dependent on Russian gas.

  1. The protest against the LNG terminal in Rügen, Germany, is primarily driven by concerns about climate and environmental impact, as stated by Letzte Generation.
  2. The police had to intervene during the demonstration above the Mukran Seaport, where Liquefied Natural Gas is being unloaded, leading to the arrest of 18 people and the issuance of 20 warnings.
  3. The group Letzte Generation, based in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, plans to continue their protests against the Rügen Terminal on Sunday and Monday, highlighting their opposition to the project.
  4. Despite the controversy and protests, the German government, including authorities in Sassnitz, continues to support the Rügen Terminal, citing energy security as a primary concern, especially following the Russian attack on Ukraine.
