Last GDL strike of the year has begun
Most passenger trains are suspended for 24 hours. Deutsche Bahn has drawn up an emergency timetable. If you can, however, you should use other means of transport. The good news is that this is the last strike until January 7. After that, things could get even tougher.
A nationwide warning strike by train drivers in passenger transport began on Thursday evening. The strike was called by the train drivers' union GDL and is scheduled to last for 24 hours until 10 p.m. on Friday. The warning strike in freight transport began at 6 pm. Deutsche Bahn has drawn up an emergency timetable, but expects a number of train cancellations and delays on local and long-distance services.
The company called on travelers to postpone trips planned for Friday if possible. For affected tickets, the train binding has been lifted to allow for postponements.
The collective bargaining round between Deutsche Bahn and the GDL officially began at the start of November. The sticking point is the GDL's demand for a 35-hour week in shift work - the current figure is 38 hours. Deutsche Bahn rejects negotiations on this and believes that the demand cannot be implemented in view of the shortage of skilled workers. The union justified its renewed warning strike with the employer's refusal to negotiate the core demand of a reduction in working hours.
"Longer strikes" in January
According to the union, however, this is their last industrial action of the year. There will also be no further industrial action until January 7. After that, however, things could get even worse - "longer strikes" have already been announced.
Deutsche Bahn welcomed the Christmas truce in principle, but sharply criticized the short-notice strike announcement and called on the GDL to resume negotiations.
