Bus and train - Largest expansion of local transport in MV for years

With the timetable change on Sunday, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will have additional bus and rail services in local transport. The state has ordered 1.2 million more service kilometers on the railways alone than in the previous year, said Economics Minister Reinhard Meyer (SPD) in Schwerin on Thursday. This corresponds to an increase of seven percent and is the largest increase since the mid-1990s.

Pasewalk to be better connected

According to Meyer, the RE10, which currently terminates in Züssow coming from Stralsund, will be extended to Pasewalk (Vorpommern-Greifswald district). This means that in future the train will run every hour between Pasewalk and Stralsund, whereas previously this was the case every two hours. A through train will run twice daily from Pasewalk to Rostock and back. A new express S-Bahn is to provide a better connection between the Güstrow area and Rostock. At weekends, there will be more night-time S-Bahn services in the Hanseatic city. There will also be more trains on the RE1 between Schwerin and Hamburg at weekends. From the end of April, a new RE50 line will provide an hourly service between Rostock and Neustrelitz instead of the previous two-hourly service. However, restrictions are to be expected due to planned construction work on the Hamburg-Berlin line.

Introduction of regional buses across district borders

Regional buses will be used where trains do not run. Meyer announced that a corresponding network would be gradually established. The first lines will be launched with the timetable change, such as line 012 from Neubrandenburg via Penzlin to Waren (Müritz). The buses will run every hour during the week and every two hours at weekends. The same applies to route 330 from Wismar via Gägelow to Grevesmühlen and route 170 from Schwerin to Sternberg via Cambs and Brüel. According to Meyer, further Regiobus lines will be available in spring, for example between Sanitz and Greifswald via Marlow, Tribsees and Grimmen and on Rügen between Königstuhl and Klein Zicker via Sassnitz and Binz.

Vorpommern-Rügen still without an on-call bus

According to Meyer, the districts of Ludwigslust-Parchim and Nordwestmecklenburg will be offering a nationwide on-call bus system from January 1st. The district of Rostock intends to do this by the third quarter. The districts of Mecklenburgische Seenplatte and Vorpommern-Greifswald would improve their own systems. In Vorpommern-Rügen, a system has to be set up from scratch.

Around 180,000 Deutschlandtickets in MV

The Deutschlandticket has also led to increased demand for local transport in MV, according to the Minister. At the end of October, there were around 180,000 subscriptions in the north-east. This demand is one reason for the increase in the number of tickets on offer, which is being financed from reserves from previous years in this area.
