Large-scale battery storage facility to be built in Alfeld an der Leine

A new large-scale battery storage facility is to be built in Alfeld (Leine) in Lower Saxony in the coming years. The project will provide 137.5 megawatts of storage power and 275 megawatt hours of storage capacity for the German power grid, the company Kyon Energy announced on Monday. The capacity of the project is sufficient to supply one million households with electricity for one hour.

According to the Munich-based company, this is the largest approved storage project in Europe to date. The planned storage capacity in the small town in southern Lower Saxony exceeds the current largest facility in Europe by 50 percent. Construction of the facility is scheduled to start next year, with commissioning to follow by the end of 2025.

"The town is very proud that the company has decided to build its new large-scale battery storage facility here in Alfeld," said Alfeld's mayor Bernd Beushausen (SPD), according to the press release. The approval from the city's building regulations office has been available since the end of October, according to the company.

This large-scale battery storage facility will primarily store and release energy in the form of electricity. This excess energy can later be used to supplement the power grid when demand for electricity is high.
