- Large fire in Verden near the cathedral

A fire has broken out in a historic building near the cathedral in the inner city of Verden. The building houses a guesthouse and residential units, according to a police spokesperson. The fire is large, with the roof already collapsed. It was initially unclear whether anyone was still in the building. However, it is likely that everyone is outside, the spokesperson said. This is not entirely certain, as the fire department's operations are ongoing.

The police asked people to avoid the area around Anita-Augspurg-Platz in Verden and keep routes clear for emergency services. "Please keep windows and doors closed in the inner city area of Verden," the police wrote on X. "Please also avoid the entire inner city of Verden," they added.

The intense heat from the fire could potentially spread to nearby buildings in the inner city of Verden. Despite the collapse of the roof, the firefighters are working diligently to extinguish the remnants of the blaze.
