Language learning app also available for Münsterland Low German

A dedicated language learning app is now available for learning Münsterland dialect. A new version of the East Frisian language learning app "PlattinO" has now been launched under the title "PlattinO-Münsterland". "There is a great deal of interest in learning Münsterland Low German among the population in Münsterland," said Professor of Linguistics at the University of Münster, Helmut Spiekermann, in a statement from the Ostfriesische Landschaft in Aurich on Monday. The Low German expert developed the new service together with a team. The language learning app from East Frisia, which served as a template, has been downloaded around 75,000 times since its launch in 2021.

According to the information provided, there are already offers to learn Low German - for example in book form or as language courses, but none for smartphones or tablets. The team at the Center for Low German at the Institute of German Studies at the University of Münster hopes that the new offer will also inspire young people to preserve the Low German language of the Münsterland region.

The Plattdüütskbüro of the Ostfriesische Landschaft in Aurich, a regional association for culture, science and education, developed the app for systematic language acquisition. The texts, which were originally written in East Frisian Platt, were translated into Münsterland Platt and audio files were re-recorded. In the app, whose title stands for "Platt in Ostfriesland", learners can access 40 chapters in which more than 735 vocabulary words can be practiced.

The language learning app "PlattinO-Münsterland" is specifically designed for learning Münsterland dialect, leveraging the success of its East Frisian counterpart. The new service, developed by Professor Helmut Spiekermann and his team, aims to engage younger generations in preserving the Low German language of the Münsterland region.
