Statistics - Land consumption in Bavaria is increasing
Land consumption in Bavaria increased last year. This amounted to an average of 12.2 hectares per day - which corresponds to an area of around 17 soccer pitches, according to the State Statistical Office in Fürth on Tuesday. In the previous year, an average of 10.3 hectares per day had been used for settlement and transportation purposes.
According to the state office, 865,776 hectares, or 12.3 percent of Bavaria's area, were used for settlements and transport routes as of December 31, 2022 - the area used in this way thus increased by 0.5 percent compared to the previous year. This also includes playgrounds, parks and parking spaces. Almost 39% is accounted for by traffic routes, around a quarter by residential construction and around 11% by industrial and commercial areas.
Almost a quarter of the increase in settlement and traffic areas is attributable to utility facilities, which also includes areas for the generation of renewable energies, it said. "The fact that around a fifth of the new land taken up is for ground-mounted photovoltaics shows that the implementation of the decentralized energy transition is in full swing," said Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger (Freie Wähler).
According to the statistics experts, the city of Munich is the leader in terms of settlement and transportation areas in Bavaria, followed by Nuremberg and Bamberg. Bringing up the rear is the district of Garmisch-Patenkirchen.
At 46.1%, just under half of Bavaria's total area was used for agriculture at the end of 2022, as in the previous year. Another good third was covered by forest (35.3 percent).
The State Statistical Office pointed out that a classification error was discovered last year at the Grafenwoehr military training area. In large parts, this was incorrectly attributed to settlements instead of vegetation. A recalculation for 2014 to 2021 was therefore carried out for the six affected municipalities in the Upper Palatinate. However, there were virtually no changes in land consumption across Bavaria as a result. Only in 2016 will the average land consumption per day fall from 9.8 hectares to 9.7 hectares.

The authorities have reported that the increase in land consumption in Bavaria from the previous year was primarily driven by utility facilities and the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure. This forth year will see a slight decrease in the average land consumption per day due to corrections made to the Grafenwoehr military training area statistics.
The State Statistical Office's statistics reveal that Bavaria's largest contributors to land consumption for settlements and transportation are the cities of Munich, Nuremberg, and Bamberg, while the district of Garmisch-Patenkirchen has the least.
