Lake Constance water levy could triple by 2041

The price of water from Lake Constance is set to rise significantly in the coming years. The Lake Constance Water Supply Association plans to increase the average levy for 2024 by around eight percent to 88 cents per cubic meter of water - i.e. 1,000 liters - as announced on Tuesday after the association meeting in Leinfelden-Echterdingen near Stuttgart.

By 2041, the levy could even rise to around 2.70 euros per cubic meter - that would be more than three times as much - partly due to the construction of new plants. "Bodensee-Wasserversorgung expects this to lead to a gradual increase in the price of water for citizens in the association area, as the project costs will be passed on to the members of the special-purpose association and they will pass on costs at their own discretion," it said.

Bodensee-Wasserversorgung supplies 320 towns and municipalities with a total of around four million inhabitants with drinking water from Lake Constance. Last year, 131.7 million cubic meters of drinking water were pumped (2021: 130.6 million). "The trend of increasing water supply since 2010 as a result of climate change is therefore continuing."

  1. The proposed increase in water prices by the Lake Constance Water Supply Association could impact the budgets of numerous consumers, as around four million people in 320 towns and municipalities depend on the organization for their drinking water.
  2. Climate change, leading to rising water demand, is one of the factors contributing to the potential tripling of water prices from Lake Constance by 2041, placing an additional burden on consumers, particularly in the association area.
