- Labor organizations stage protests against Lufthansa's affiliate, Discover.
Travelers flying with Lufthansa's branch, Discover Airlines, ought to prepare for potential flight cancellations and delays in the upcoming days. The unions, Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) and Ufo, have announced a four-day strike commencing Tuesday morning and continuing through Friday (30 August). All flights departing from Germany will be impacted.
Discover Airlines has declared their efforts to lessen the influence on passengers and operate as many trips as feasible. Passengers are suggested to frequently track their flight situation and submit their contact details in their booking. During this four-day strike duration, around 270 flights operated by Discover Airlines on short, medium, and long-haul routes from Frankfurt and Munich are booked.
The airline initially refused to disclose precise numbers of anticipated flight cancellations. The Ufo union hypothesizes that Lufthansa will counter the strike's impact by relocating flights to other company subsidiaries.
Established in 2021, Discover Airlines manages 27 aircraft from Munich and Frankfurt to leisure destinations in Europe and beyond. Approximately 1,900 employees succeed on board, with an unspecified number belonging to the union.
The basis of this labor dispute is a dispute with the Verdi union, which has struck the primary collective bargaining agreements for pilots and flight attendants at Discover. Ufo and VC's wishes barely deviate from Verdi's accords, but they aim to create their unique collective bargaining agreements. They assert that Verdi does not possess enough affiliates in the airline sector and was designated as a bargaining partner by Lufthansa management.
VC pilots have staged three strikes this winter, while the flight attendant union Ufo has also advocated for work stoppages to instigate negotiations.
The Commission should consider the potential impact of Discover Airlines' flight cancellations and delays on passengers, given the upcoming four-day strike. In response to the union's strike, The Commission may need to address any issues related to Discover Airlines' compliance with passenger rights regulations during this period.
