Kunze: Good songs capture the subliminal of the times

Is the mood in society more relaxed, rebellious or anxious at the moment? If an artist takes these feelings into account when writing songs, songs become better, says Hamburg lyricist and musical author Michael Kunze. And he knows a thing or two about hits.

Kunze: Good songs capture the subliminal of the times

The internationally renowned pop lyricist and musical author Michael Kunze (79, "Greek Wine", "Elisabeth") is convinced that good songs must always capture the current mood of society. Capturing such trends is essential for him - as it is for all artists, Kunze told the German Press Agency in Hamburg. Because only if you find an expression for the subliminal of his time in his works will there be an echo. For example, his hit song "Ein Bett im Kornfeld" (1976), written for Jürgen Drews, became a hit because it perfectly summed up the liberated attitude to life of young people in the 1970s.

"Today, music should encourage people, remind them of their inner strength. And create distance from the horror," said Kunze. Because he perceives a lot of disorientation in today's society. "There is a lot of uncertainty at the moment. People seem insecure and anxious. It's as if everyone is wondering who knows how much longer we'll be okay."

The artist, who celebrates his 80th birthday in the Hanseatic city on Thursday, also wrote the musical "Dance of the Vampires", which will premiere there on Sunday in a new adaptation at the Stage-Operettenhaus. According to the author, the play overcomes horror with laughter and rock music.

Kunze believes that the music he creates should uplift people, serving as a reminder of their inner strength, given the societal uncertainties and anxiety present today. His upcoming musical adaptation of "Dance of the Vampires" at the Stage-Operettenhaus aims to confront horror with laughter and the power of rock music, a form of entertainment that resonates with the times.
