Kunstverein in Bremen celebrates its bicentenary
This Tuesday, the Kunstverein in Bremen is celebrating its bicentenary. The Kunstverein is the private sponsor of the Kunsthalle Bremen, which is one of the largest art museums in the country. To mark the anniversary, the Kunsthalle is holding special exhibitions this year and has published an anniversary publication.
The association received many donations for the anniversary, as the chairwoman of the Kunstverein, Nicole Lamotte, said the day before. These are important because the association has not had a regular annual acquisition budget since the 1980s, said Lamotte. "Instead, it relies on the support of members and art lovers."
The Kunstverein was founded on November 14, 1823 and is reportedly one of the oldest in Germany. It has more than 10,000 members and is said to be the largest in the country. The purpose of the association is to revive and spread the appreciation of art in Bremen, as stated in its statutes. Members pay contributions that help to finance the running of the museum.
The director of the Kunsthalle, Christoph Grunenberg, said: "At the beginning of the Kunstverein in 1823, there was already the idea of building up a collection." This was actually unusual for an art association. Normally, such associations were dedicated to exhibitions. "But the collection is the heart and origin of the Kunstverein."
This anniversary celebration at the Kunstverein in Bremen highlights its long-standing commitment to art and history. The association's historic role as a private sponsor of art museums, such as the Kunsthalle Bremen, extends its impact on the wider artistic community and museum culture in Germany.
In line with its purpose to revive and spread appreciation for art in Bremen, the Kunstverein continues to rely on its members and art enthusiasts for support, especially in the absence of a regular annual acquisition budget.
