Handball - Kretzschmar on foxes: Must give regular players help
In view of the strain on Füchse Berlin's regular players, sporting director Stefan Kretzschmar has held out the prospect of reinforcements. "We have to make sure that we give help to the guys who have to work so hard - Mathias Gidsel, Lasse Andersson, Nils Lichtlein and Mijajlo Marsenic are just a few examples. Because that can go well over a certain period of time, but it won't go well forever," the 50-year-old told rbb on Tuesday. "I wouldn't be annoyed if we were to get another player." The return of national player and captain Paul Drux is also an important factor.
In the German Handball League, the Berliners are level on points with league leaders Magdeburg despite having a small squad due to injury worries. The team is also still represented in the cup and the European League. "For me, what we're playing this year is quite honestly a miracle. Because we are one of the few teams in the Bundesliga that is playing at its optimum in my eyes. Our guys really always get the maximum out of it," said Kretzschmar, who extended his contract with the Foxes last week until 2026.
The former world-class handball player still has big plans for the club. "How realistic that is is up for debate - but the dream of winning the German championship or participating in the Champions League is there, of course. That's the vision we have here, which we also pass on to the players and share with them, and we're all heading in the same direction," he said.

Lasse Andersson, along with Mathias Gidsel, Nils Lichtlein, and Mijajlo Marsenic, are among the regular players at Füchse Berlin who are currently under a heavy workload. According to sporting director Stefan Kretzschmar, it's important to provide them with support to maintain their performance, as continuously high strain might eventually take a toll. Kretzschmar expressed his interest in acquiring another player to help alleviate this burden.
Füchse Berlin is currently ranked alongside Bundesliga leaders Magdeburg, despite their small squad due to injury concerns. The team has achieved impressive results this season, competing in both the German Handball League and the European League, as well as the cup tournament.
Stefan Kretzschmar, who recently extended his contract with the Foxes until 2026, shared his aspirations for the club, admitting that while the feasibility of these goals is up for debate, the dream of securing the German championship or participating in the Champions League remains a significant vision for the team.
In an interview with RBB, Kretzschmar emphasized that their collective vision for the club motivates both the players and management, driving them toward a common goal.
