Parties - Kretschmer for Merz as CDU candidate for chancellor

The deputy chairman of the CDU, Michael Kretschmer, has once again spoken out in favor of Bundestag party leader Friedrich Merz as the CDU's candidate for chancellor. He has done an "outstanding job as party leader for two years, he has reunited the CDU and is therefore the logical candidate for chancellor", said Saxony's Minister President in an interview with the Bild newspaper. "I have known him for a long time and I trust him to fill the office of Chancellor much more successfully than Olaf Scholz at the moment."

Kretschmer criticized the federal government's agreement following the budget dispute, saying that the traffic light government does not understand "what is happening in this country". "Deciding on additional burdens in a recession is irresponsible," he also posted on the news platform X (formerly Twitter). "Freight forwarders, tradespeople and SMEs tell me that the current burdens are barely manageable. And then the traffic light increases the price of CO2."
