Saxony's Head Honcho, Michael Kretschmer, from the CDU, has backed the notion of establishing a state-run law enforcement unit for border control. "This would significantly boost our internal security," Kretschmer mentioned during an electoral discourse on MDR with the leading candidates for the state election.

He justified that the plan doesn't clash with any constitutional principles and there won't be any police staff cutbacks from other regions. Kretschmer suggested that about 400 extra officers would be recruited by broadening the selection process for newcomers.

In light of the continually high number of unlawful border crossings, Saxony is contemplating forming its own border police force, akin to Bavaria's structure. A counsel is scheduled to submit a recommendation by September.

The Green Party's top contender, Katja Maier, raised doubts about recruiting several hundred officers in a swift manner. The SPD's top pick, Petra Köpping, endorsed the idea, as long as it doesn't impair the existing police force's operational territory.

Kretschmer, the CDU's frontrunner, also reiterated his call for lowering Germany's refugee population. Last year, more than 300,000 individuals submitted asylum applications in the country. "We need to reduce that count to between 30,000 and 40,000," Kretschmer asserted.

The CDU, led by Saxony's Head Honcho Michael Kretschmer, has wholeheartedly supported the establishment of a state-controlled law enforcement unit for border control. Additionally, the CDU remains committed to Kretschmer's proposal of enlarging the recruitment process to bring about 400 extra officers to the force.
