Bundesliga - Kovac remains Wolfsburg coach: "Wants to return trust"

Coach Niko Kovac is delighted to have the backing of the supervisory board and management during VfL Wolfsburg's sporting crisis. "It is an appreciation. This has not only come from Marcel Schäfer, but also from Mr. Witter. I do believe that we work well, intensively and very meticulously as a coaching team. That is also perceived," said Kovac on Thursday ahead of the next Bundesliga game at Darmstadt 98 (Saturday, 3.30pm/Sky). He wanted to "return this trust".

Wolfsburg started the season as European Cup contenders. After being knocked out of the DFB Cup, they have only won one of their last eight games in the Bundesliga. Despite this, managing director Marcel Schäfer and supervisory board chairman Frank Witter spoke out in favor of continuing to work with the criticized Kovac after the 0:1 against SC Freiburg.

"I have every confidence in the words that have been spoken," said the coach. "But I also know that this won't last until the end of the season if we don't do better in terms of points. Everyone understands that - and of course I do too."

Despite the poor results, the 52-year-old coach believes in a sporting turnaround. "It's more of a results crisis than a playing crisis," said Kovac. "I'm convinced: It's only a matter of time, when will it happen? Then things will turn around again." The team is "not a bunch that no longer produces anything. On the contrary: the team is willing. This is a team that sacrifices itself every day in training."
