Koschinat believes in rescue: "Want to attack fully"
New coach Uwe Koschinat believes that VfL Osnabrück will not be relegated despite the team's last place and the large gap in the second division table. "I am firmly convinced that the team has much more potential than the current points and table situation indicates," said the 52-year-old at his official presentation at Bremer Brücke on Monday afternoon. "The last two years in Osnabrück have shown that VfL are capable of playing a very, very strong second half of the season. In the last three games before the winter break, we want to create a better starting position for ourselves so that we can then fully attack in the second half of the season."
Koschinat was appointed as the successor to Tobias Schweinsteiger this morning. The Osnabrück club did not provide any information about the contract term of the former Arminia Bielefeld, 1. FC Saarbrücken, SV Sandhausen and Fortuna Köln coach. After seven games without a win, VfL are currently six points behind the relegation places and nine points behind the 15th place in the 2nd Bundesliga.
"We were looking for someone who has a lot of experience, who has already faced difficult situations as a coach in his career and who can deal with the pressure and headwinds in this situation," said sporting director Amir Shapourzadeh. "During the talks, Uwe never had any doubts, only conviction. He was literally burning for the job."
Koschinat aims to improve VfL Osnabrück's position before the winter break in Bundesliga 2, as he believes in a strong second half of the season. Despite the team's current last place and large gap in the table, the new coach sees untapped potential in VfL Osnabrück, particularly after witnessing their strong second halves in the past two seasons.
